The Green IT Cube receives the Blue Angel eco-label

GDC Green IT Cube

June 29, 2020

We are proud to announce that the Green IT Cube, the high-performance data center of GSI and FAIR, has been awarded the “Blauer Engel” (Blue Angel): the official environmental label of the Federal Government of Germany. The Blue Angel sets demanding standards for environmentally friendly architecture and data center operation, making this recognition an outstanding achievement in sustainable IT infrastructure.

The Green IT Cube was built based on the patented and award-winning cooling technology developed by Prof. Dr. Volker Lindenstruth, Professor at Goethe University and former head of Scientific IT at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. This innovation, which was granted a European patent in collaboration with Goethe University and GSI, enables data centers to operate with up to 50 percent less primary energy consumption than conventional systems while making efficient use of waste heat.

The successful patenting and commercialization of this “Green IT” concept marked a major milestone in sustainable data center development. NDC-GARBE (formerly NDC) has acquired the rights to market and further develop this pioneering technology worldwide, bringing the benefits of energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and lower operational costs to projects across the globe.

The Blue Angel award underscores once again the potential of the Green Cube technology to set new benchmarks in sustainability and efficiency demonstrating how close collaboration between science and industry can lead to practical, scalable solutions for the digital future.
